When I am not carrying a brush or a chisel, I am chasing moments with a camera. My family and I have lived on the Big Island of Hawaii for the past 4 years. In the process of completing degrees in Art and Anthropology at the University of Hawaii, I have traveled and wor ked with various artists who have offered tremendous insight and inspiration. My education is ongoing and learning is integral to my lifelong development in the arts.
Over the years, I have worked as an Art teacher for children and adolescents, including those with prominent developmental challenges. I combine technique, material exploration, and historical reference to build lessons that are relevant, challenging, and alluring to my students. I encourage a sense of freedom from the idea of art as a production, so students might enjoy the experience that art offers through their own, individual experiences.
Most recently, my family and I spent nearly 6 months in Florence, Italy, where I learned to paint Buon Fresco (eg. Sistine Chapel) in the traditional manner. I also worked in sculpture and hiked through the great Carrara marble quarries where Italians (including the famous Michelangelo) have been harvesting some of their finest stone since ancient Rome. I also spent countless hours in a darkroom, printing Black and White photographs from my grandfather’s old Asahi Pentax 35mm camera that accompanied me on various exploits.
I create because it is through art that I perceive, interpret, and communicate with the world. I believe that my work comes through me but not necessarily from me, and have come to view the process of making art as a form of meditation in this way.
Since returning to Hawaii, I have been expanding on a project that focuses on the multifaceted Dimensions of Love, that began in Italy and continues to grow, with the help of participants from the local community and beyond.
